Lower Eyelids

Some of the earliest signs of aging begins with a change in the appearance of the eyelids. Because of the thinness of the skin, the eyelids are very susceptible to the aging process. Eyelid surgery must be performed meticulously and must ALWAYS appear natural. It must be individualized to each patient, especially as the expectations of eyelid surgery are quite different among Men and Women. Correction of the eyelids may include procedures for the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both.

A common complaint is "bags" under the eyes which can make people appear tired, even when they are well-rested. These "bags" results from weakening of the delicate tissue beneath the eyes, resulting in the bulging of fat that is normally hidden deep below. This can happen as part of the normal aging process, or this may be an inherited condition that develops at an early age.

In addition, the skin beneath the eyes is extremely delicate and may develop wrinkles before other areas of the face. Lower eyelid surgery involves removing the bulging fat ("bags") and tightening the skin, resulting in a smoother under eye area without an unnatural "hollowed-out" appearance.

Drs. Skolnik and Schulman are also experienced with "scarless" eyelid surgery when the incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid. They also have advanced injection techniques allowing for non-surgical correction of lower eyelid bags and hollows with fillers and volumizers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The scar is just below the lower eyelashes and is virtually invisible. In some patients the incision can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid which results in a completely "scarless" surgery.

  • Sometimes. This depends on what is causing the dark circles. If the circles are formed by shadows cast by the excess fat, they will disappear after the surgery. If the shadows are from pigmentation or excess blood vessels, other procedures must be added to improve or eliminate them. If you have dark circles, your physician will be able to tell you if it will be removed during the surgery. The surgery may be combined with other procedures such as chemical peeks or laser resurfacing to help eliminate any residual dark circles.

  • Yes. You wil have some very small stitches which will be removed 5 days after surgery.
