After Weight Loss

Dr. Matthew Schulman specializes in body contouring after weight loss. The increase in the number of surgical weight loss procedures (bariatric surgery) has resulted in successful weight loss for countless individuals. This weight loss can be massive, and the skin often does not have the ability to "shrink." The result is loose, hanging skin that can be as problematic as the weight itself. More importantly, the remaining skin can make successful weight loss seem "incomplete."

Dr. Schulman works closely with bariatric surgeons and nutritionists, and has developed techniques that maximize results and minimize potential complications. He customizes his body contouring approach to your needs and desires.

Dr. Schulman is a published author, invited speaker, and featured lecturer. He has been an invited guest on multiple radio shows dedicated to bariatric surgery and weight loss. He is routinely hosted by bariatric support groups throughout New York and New Jersey and is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons. He is a Professor of Plastic Surgery at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and publishes a monthly email newsletter specifically on body contouring after weight loss.

Dr. Schulman's compassion, aesthetic results, and uncompromsing commitment to your safety makes him highly desired in the field of body contouring after weight loss.

Breast Reduction

Large breasts, or macromastia, can be a serious problem for some women. The weight of the breasts may cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and rashes beneath the breasts. Other women simply want their breasts smaller for cosmetic reasons. Regardless of your motivation, breast reduction surgery can be one of the most satisfying and life-changing procedures. There are several techniques, all of which aim to create a smaller and lifted breast.

"Breast Lift" or Mastopexy

Many factors contribute to changes in breast shape and size. Some women's breasts do not develop an ideal shape or position after puberty. The normal aging process can result in "sagging" breasts, as the tissue loses its support. Pregnancy and breast feeding can also cause changes in the breast which can be helped with a breast lift. Additionally, weight loss may result in breast "sagging" as well.

Panniculectomy

A panniculectomy involves the removal of the large apron of skin that can remain on the abdomen after massive weight loss. This "pannus" can cause rashes, infection, skin irritation, and back pain. The incision is placed in an area that is easily hidden beneath clothing.

Unlike during an abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck," no muscle repair or relocation of the belly button is performed during a panniculectomy. In the case of massive weight loss, the removal of this skin often facilitates an increased exercise regimen, thereby making additional weight loss more likely.

"Tummy Tuck" or Abdominoplasty after weight loss

After successful weight loss through diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery, the skin of the abdomen can become lax. This excess skin can be quite severe in some cases. An abdominoplasty involves the removal of this excess skin and repair of the underlying muscles which have become weakened. This procedure is commonly combined with liposuction of the flanks and thighs.

The scars are well hidden below underwear or bathing suits. Sometimes, in cases of severe skin laxity, a midline incision may be used to obtain the best possible contour.

Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia

Male breast formation (gynecomastia) is a very common condition. Although benign, it can psychologically affect those with this condition. It may affect one or both breasts and is common during puberty. It may also occur as a result of prescription medicines, drug abuse, or may have no known cause.

After weight loss, many men complain of "breast formation." While this is not true gynecomastia, because it is excess skin and not breast tissue, it is still as troubling.

"Lower Body Lift"

This is also referred to a "circumferential lipectomy" or a "belt lipectomy." After massive weight loss, the excess skin remains and sags. This procedure is designed to simultaneously address the excess skin in both the front and the back of the body. A lower body lift is equivalent to "pulling up your pants." When done correctly, it not only results in an improved appearance of the abdomen and lower back, but also provides a powerful improvement in the buttock and outer thigh contour. The laxity of the abdominal muscles can also be tightened during this procedure.

Upper Body Lift

An "Upper Body Lift" addresses the excess skin of the upper back and the areas commonly referred to as "banana rolls" While a "lower body lift" is a powerful way to improve the area of the lower back and buttocks, it does nothing to improve the upper back area.

The excess skin is removed and the incision is carefully placed in an area hidden beneath a bra or bathing suit.

"Upper Arm Reduction" or Brachioplasty

The upper arms are particularly sensitive to fluctuations in weight. After losing weight, the skin an dfat of the upper arm can become lax and begin to hange. This results in what many refer to as "bat wings". This laxity cannot be corrected through exercise. Many people find this so distressing that they wear long sleeves shirts year round, even in the summer. women are usually so self-conscious that they avoid social events that require dresses that show their arms.

Thigh Lift

After weight loss, many patients have excess skin along their inner thighs. This area is not corrected by an abdominoplasty or a "lower body lift." Liposuction does not offer an adequate correction, because there still remains excess skin.

The excess tissue in this area is removed and the scar is hidden in the groin. The result is improved contour of the inner thighs - extending from the groin to the knees. This procedure may be combined with other body contouring procedures.
